The XC90, manufactured by Swedish automaker Volvo, is a Luxury Mid-Size Crossover SUV released in 2002. At present there is only one generation of this particular model but it will be given a facelift in 2010 and a second generation is due for release in 2012 and is said to compete with the BMW X5.

The XC90 is a fantastic vehicle. We have three kids under 5, and the XC90 copes with absolutely everything that is thrown at it extremely well. It has been the daily run about, the family holiday tourer and used for regular skip runs - and it takes it all in its stride.
Ours has been very reliable and the interior/exterior is tough and well designed. Weak points on the earlier vehicles are the turbo intercooler (about £600 to replace) and the diesel injectors (expensive!). Also the foot operated handbrake is always cause for an MOT failure each year...
With used values now under £9k they really are an excellent buy. There was an uprated engine introduced in 2006 with 185bhp, but this came along with the joys of EGR valves and DPF's (diesel particulate filters) which can be troublesome, especially if you use the vehicle for short journeys. The earlier 163bhp model is certainly spritely enough and still returns 35mpg.
The XC90 is part time 4x4. If the front wheels spin more than 1/7 of a revolution then power is automatically transferred to the rear. It is not a hard core off-roader by any means, however on a set of good winter tyres it is a very secure place to be.
